Has Apple Inc. monopolized the technology industry?

Apple Sued for Monopolizing the Worldwide MP3 market

...But, is that such a bad thing?

If what Apple wanted to do, just like any other company, is to create brand loyalty, then essentially they are doing just that. When I purchased by Mac Book Pro before entering my freshman year of college, I would have never imagined the company that Apple has become. They have slowly taken over the technology industry, and strategically at that. It is so that I can buy almost any technology product to fulfill any of my technological needs from Apple Inc. If their customers are happy and satisfied, then why not develop more products to satisfy all of their needs, outside of computers and ipods?

The special thing about Apple Inc. is that they have taken the initiative to develop their company into an all integrated, all interactive format. From their commercials, to their website to the itunes store on itunes, the company is synchronized. If you hear a song playing during a commercial for the up and coming Mac Book Air, you are certain to go onto itunes and find that song for yourself. After you do that, you should probably list your favorites and allow the "magical itunes man" select all of the songs, whether old or new, that you would be interested in, based on your purchase of that one song you heard on the Mac Book Air commercial.

I find it amazing. Technology has become so advanced that I can have my phone, my music, the Internet, my GPS, my calendar and so forth on one single device. The innovation that Apple has to offer its customers is what sets them apart from others. From my perspective, their customers are loyal because Apple creates every product these customers may need. Besides the fact that their advertising is unbelievable in itself, the products aren't too shabby either.

Free...what?

At what point does 'free speech' become 'free and distasteful speech' or 'free and offensive speech'?

If you have yet to be exposed to Juicycampus.com, there is a part of me that wishes I were you. Juicy Campus is a website that provides a open forum for college students all around to country to write so-called "gossip" about their peers, their school or anything they so desire.  When I first heard about this website, I immediately went and checked it out.  I was extremely appalled and could not stop thinking about what was running through the creator's mind when he stirred up this "brilliant" idea.  In fact,  I hope that the content found on this website would appall any viewer.

Although Juicy Campus provides an open forum for students to practice their right to free speech, the website has gotten out of control.  I feel it is safe to say the goal of this forum was not to provide educational or helpful information to students, but rather to provide every day gossip and an outlet for an easily accessible rumor mill.  The degrading nature of this website is nothing short of disturbing and completely ridiculous.  It allows for students to anonymously "call out" others.  Posts range from being highly offensive to plain rude - and sometimes can lead to ruining an individual's reputation on campus or otherwise.  Juicy Campus' creator stated in an interview that he hoped that if students were upset by something written on the website by someone else, then they would feel compelled to write back and so forth from there. Does he not understand that that only makes it 10 times worse?

I dislike this website to such a high degree, that I don't even feel it is necessary or appropriate to mention examples of posts on this website - hopefully my review provides enough insight. This "open forum" should not be the sort of thing that consumes a college student's life.  When did the focus shift from education and occasional partying to degrading and offending as many students and organizations as possible?  Every person who reads it on a regular basis, states that it is just "pure entertainment"... but how would they feel if their name was posted?

My guess is they wouldn't think it was "pure entertainment" anymore.

Reality Television... --- Originally posted on February 6, 2008

When you think of television now a days...what do you think of first?

Reality television has literally taken over this little (or big) box we called the TV. Now, as much as I enjoy watching people making fools of themselves by singing in front of millions of people knowing they sound like a dying chicken, I still think our world has been consumed by ridiculous entertainment. Shows such as "A Moment of Truth", where contestants answer questions while attached to a lie detector, not only proves what people will succumb to just to make a little cash, but also proves the entertainment world's dire need to attract viewers sick of the "ordinary" reality shows.

When a new show hits the reality scene, it's usually either a hit or miss. I remember watching one of the earliest episodes of "The Singing Bee," and I clearly said earliest episode because the show didn't even last for very long to begin with. But, that was a show I could say was painful to watch. From what I can tell, "The Real World" on MTV set off some sort of fire and people were enthralled with watching other peoples lives -- the sadness, the happiness and most definitely the weirdness. It may be the fact that watching other people fail in life may make everyone else feel better about themselves...or maybe it's just plain fun to watch and even judge people we don't even know.

I've watched more reality television than I probably should be proud of - but, lets face it, once you start, it's hard to stop. You develop a sort of "relationship" with these "characters" you watch on TV. You either end up relating to these people or finding qualities in them you never want to find in yourself. Reality TV has become a phenomenon. From watching "The Bachelor" and deciding which girl you would choose if you were in his position to watching "Super Sweet Sixteen" and judging these 15 and 16 year old kids and their parent's money. Like, no mom, I want a BMW, not a Mercedes.

Again, this is pure entertainment. But when realizing that more reality shows then shows where directors and writers could actually use their talent, are broadcast on TV, it makes me realize where our world is truly going. I love television and all it has to offer my brain when it needs a little break from studying 24/7, but sometimes I would like to watch some talent in action.

Give the writers guild some more credit and in turn they'll give us more worthwhile television to watch.
